A lakeside wedding or anniversary usually runs on the light. Guests arrive in the afternoon, dinner happens while the sun is on the water, and the dancing starts as it drops behind the hills. I’ll ask about your timeline so any ceremony music, dinner and the first dance line up with the evening you’re picturing.

Family reunions and cabin parties are often looser, spread over an afternoon with kids swimming and a barbecue going. The music can sit in the background early on and pick up once people are fed and ready to dance.

Lakefront properties and campgrounds are rarely built for a DJ setup, so a few details matter more here than in town. Power is the big one: outlets at a cabin or boathouse can be a long way from the lawn, and a shared circuit can struggle with a busy kitchen. Wind off the lake and afternoon sun are worth thinking about too.

Sound also travels a long way over calm water, especially in the evening. If there are neighbours along the shore, it’s worth agreeing on a finish time and talking to them ahead of the party. When you check your date, I’ll ask about:

• Where the nearest outlet is, and whether it shares a circuit with the kitchen
• Whether there’s a sheltered spot out of the wind and sun
• Where a vehicle can unload, especially on steep or narrow cabin driveways
• A finish time that works for the neighbours along the shore

Summer brings community days, fundraisers and outdoor gatherings to the lake, and those have their own needs: a program of announcements, families coming and going, and music that suits all ages. I’ll ask the organizer for the schedule so the music works around it.

Outside summer, celebrations move indoors to halls and homes in Lake Cowichan, Youbou, Honeymoon Bay and Mesachie Lake. The rain comes in earnest, the evenings get dark early, and a Christmas party or winter birthday in a warm hall is a different night from a July dock party.
