In BC, most people call it grad rather than prom, and it’s often the biggest night of the school year. There’s a dinner, photos, speeches or a class entrance, and then a dance the grads have been looking forward to for months.

I’m Ryan. I plan the night directly with whoever is organizing it, whether that’s a parent committee, a grad council or school staff, and I’m the one who plays it.

A night with more than one part

Grad nights usually move through several stages. Guests arrive and take photos, dinner is served, there may be a class entrance or grad walk, speeches or a toast, and then the dance.

Tell me your timeline and who’s running it. If you’d like music for dinner or the class entrance as well as the dance, mention it and I’ll confirm what I can cover in your quote.

Music the grads help choose

It’s their night, so the grads should have a say. I’ll ask whether your grad council wants to send a request list, pick a class song or choose the last song of the night. Those picks set the tone for the whole dance.

A real dance, with chaperones in the room

Grads are nearly done with high school and they don’t want a dance that feels like a middle school party. They also have teachers, parents and chaperones in the room. I plan the night around the songs grads actually want to hear, within the clean-music guidelines your school or committee sets.

Once the dance starts, I watch the floor and follow the class. If they want throwbacks from their early years of high school, I’ll work those in too.

When should a grad committee book a DJ?

As early as you can. Grad season on Vancouver Island is short, and many schools choose the same late spring and early summer weekends. Send your date and venue, even if the details are still being worked out, and I’ll check my availability.

Can the grads pick the songs?

Yes. Send the list ahead of time and I’ll check it against your guidelines, then build the rest of the dance around what gets the class on the floor.

Will the music be clean?

Your school and grad committee set the guidelines, and a hotel or banquet hall may have its own rules on top of those. Send me both ahead of time, along with any songs or dances to avoid, and I’ll plan the night within them.

What should I tell you about the rest of the evening?

Tell me how your night is laid out, including dinner, the class entrance, speeches and the dance, which parts you’d like music for, and what your venue provides.

Who do I contact to book?

Me, Ryan. Call 250-667-0804 or send a message through the contact form with your date, venue or town, and roughly how many grads and guests are expected. The person you speak to is the DJ who plays your grad, so you won’t be passed along to someone else.
